My Trip to Reunion Day 1 Having just returned from a 4 day - TopicsExpress

My Trip to Reunion Day 1 Having just returned from a 4 day trip to Reunion last week I just need to share the experience … an island of true contrasts, this French island is unknown to many travelers. Not as well-known as Mauritius or the-not-so-far-away Seychelles Reunion is an unique island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. After only a 4 hour flight from Johannesburg, we approached Reunion for landing during the late afternoon. From the window of the plane the shores of Reunion could be seen and the ever daunting mountains and forests in-between, as well as the volcano on its south coast which is still very active. Upon our arrival we were met by our coach driver and our guide Jean-Luc who would be with us throughout our stay. Transferring to our hotel, night had descended over the island and not much could be seen en-route. We checked into the LUX lle de La Reunion hotel, shown to our rooms and instructed to be down for dinner which was served in the La Plage restaurant at the hotel. The resort is Gardens scattered with charming Creole villas, coconut palms and filao trees providing a beautiful setting, with exclusive views of the coral-sheltered lagoon at LHermitage. Day2 After a scrumptious breakfast, good coffee, fresh fruit from watermelons to pineapples, salmon and cheeses we embarked on a journey … sighting of the volcano Piton de le Fournaise. Situated in the southeast corner of Reunion Island, it is one of the worlds most active volcanoes and stretching to about 2 631 metres in height. Many locals earn money offering guided walking tours and rides to the volcano. Unfortunately the weather did not come to the party. After a good hour of walking we were drenched and cold but the rain and cold wind however did not damper our spirits. The scenes we saw at the top of the volcano was spectacular with mist swirling around and the landscape looking like a moon landscape. No vegetation is to be found, only black sand and volcanic rock outcrops. Lunch was enjoyed in a local restaurant – rice, lentils, fish and chicken being the staple diet. I, however found the food to be a bit too spicy for my liking but still very tasty. The desserts served throughout the whole trip was fantastic.
