My Two Cents Crime Takes Another Turn: Despite the best efforts of the police and new initiatives from the public prosecutor, a new crime made its Bonaire début this week. Car-jacking! On this occasion, a lady was dragged from her vehicle while waiting outside a supermarket. The vehicle was later used in an armed robbery at another supermarket. Now that this new milestone has passed, how long before it becomes a new favourite with the islands lowest common denominator? After all, people usually drive slowly with windows open as they take in the tranquil surroundings, easy pickings for the would be car-jacker. What about scooters? Many hire a scooter on the island as a cost effective and fun way of getting around. Im sure that the criminal element would have no hesitation in dragging a tourist to the ground and making off with their belongings and the hired scooter. It seems that every year, a new boundary is being broken on Bonaire. In the past decade or so, the crimes on the island have gone from petty theft to car theft to house-breaking to mugging to armed robbery and now car-jacking. Violent and serious crimes were very rare indeed ten years ago and such an incident would be big news and be met with shock and horror. It was also the case that the community would themselves find the culprits and before long, they would be apprehended. Now however, such crimes are just filling column inches next to everyday news items and these criminals are revered in their communities. There is only one step further for the criminal element to take and that is murder. It is not a case of if that happens but when. There is a gun culture amongst the criminal element that again, did not exist a decade ago. All it will take is a have-a-go hero or a nervous youngster with an itchy trigger finger and Pandoras Box will be opened never to be closed again...
