My ancestor George Hopwood (convict) was described by a ships captain transporting him to Australia as a villanous cut-throat who had a supporting gang. He and his gang received lashes during the voyage to Norfolk Island. Later George moved to Tasmania and married a Norfolk Islander. George also held liquor licenses and owned several hotels in Hobart along with land and supplied beef to the community.
