My ancestors were James Ashworth from the Little Peedee river area - TopicsExpress

My ancestors were James Ashworth from the Little Peedee river area in SC and Keziah Dial of the Indian territory in the NW corner of SC. They mingled with Perkinses and Bunchs and Goinses to name a few. They migrated to SW Louisiana and SE Texas. There was discrimination against these people because they were dark in color and some had nappy looking hair. There was a case against one of the Perkins men because he was colored. In Louisiana they are referred to as Redbones. This may be true in SC too. Im not certain. We had never heard the term Melungeons until we started studying our roots. Mom then recalled hearing it when she was a child, I think it was her mother referring to them old Lungeons. It appears that we have some of the same roots in our tree and Id love to hear more about them here, about their traits and lifestyles from long ago. Our ancestors claimed to be part Indian, part Portyghee (Portuguese) and part European. Any comments?
