My article published today in Loksatta Mumbai edition. This article suggests that for natural calamities ( like the recent hailstorms and heavy rains in rural Maharashtra ) there should be a national level agro insurance scheme for farmers. So rather than every time government giving ex gratia payment and that too with pathetic government procedure ,Insurance companies will pay farmers timely. Article also acknowledges that as if now almost all insurance companies doesnt issue policy against such Act of God but if government is willing and negotiates with insurance companies with millions of farmers as group insurance members, a solution may be found out.So whoever has land on his name and pays regular tax to revenue department should be automatically covered under such scheme.His premium can be paid from the tax itself.
