My assessment of this proposed route: Ahmedabad – Mumbai Route Pros: 1. Reduces Travel time between Ahmedabad and Mumbai: 2 hours by Bullet Train vs. 2.5 hours by flight (1 hour travel + 1 hour pre-boarding/Security + 30 minutes taxi) 2. Good for the Environment 3. Connects multiple cities – Surat and Vadodara to Mumbai and Ahmedabad Cons: 1. Costs Rs. 60,000 crores which is more than the annual railways budget. The recent rail fare increase generated only Rs. 8000 crores in revenue 2. Only benefits Gujarat, hardly any benefit for Maharashtra 3. Ticket cost will rival Air plane fare from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, going purely based on operational cost. So this will only benefit the relatively well-off and initial cost will not be recovered by the Central Government. (comment by Aparna Premkumar)
