My assistant Heather loves going to the wrestling matches. When I was a wee teen bairn, so did I. My father owned a steak house that was frequented by Gene LeBell, who ran the show down at the Olympic Auditorium. So, starting in around 1962 or so I would go every Wednesday night. My father would drop me off at the Olympic - yes, I went in alone, can you believe it - and I would, courtesy of Mr. LeBell, be taken to my first row press seat. Opposite me on the other side every single Wednesday night, was Dennis the Menace, Jay North. From my wonderful first row seat I saw all the greats - Freddie Blassie, the masked Destroyer (Rick Beyer - I figured out his identity because I found a photo of him in a wrestling magazine and his front cracked tooth gave him away - I held up the photo at one of the matches and he sneered at me and said, Whos THAT supposed to be? I used to have a photo of that moment, which I snapped), Mr. Moto (Oddjob in Goldfinger), Gorgeous George, Lou Thesz, Antonio Roca, Haystack Calhoun and my absolute favorite, Tricky Ricky Starr, ballet dancer and wrestler. No one ever believes me about this guy, but You Tube comes to the rescue - watch this and youll see just how much fun wrestling used to be in the Golden Age. Whoa, Nellie! youtu.be/UFdpXCGCaa4
