My beloved Mother, Renate Elisabeth (nee Roczyn) Schubert, 87, of Sarasota died this day four years ago (July 17, 2010). All who knew her, miss her sweet, thoughtful and honest personality. Her ready smile, easy laugh, and wry humor instantly won and kept lasting friends. Renate Schubert was born April 17, 1923, in Hindenburg, Germany, a coal mining region which is now part of Poland. She always remembered her Catholic teachers brave words (on the day after Kristalnacht) upholding freedom of religion then, and as the lesson of World War II, and she humbly prayed that God would bless all with peace. Renate met her husband, Hans, at the opera on her 21st birthday, and lovingly wore her wedding ring to her last day. With Hans the engineer, Renate immigrated to America in 1956. Renate willingly found work everywhere; her motto was In chaos there is opportunity. Renate the manager gladly helped others and believed deeply in social justice while improving her own skills. Over 13 years, she taught math, the universal language, to K-12 students. Renate enjoyed singing, and sailing or traveling worldwide with her beloved Hans, as well as cooking German food so well that these were gourmet meals; she would be honored by your memorial donations to Solar Cookers International. She was a wonderful, deeply devoted mother who loved children and cared about the world. Ever-curious and up for a challenge, in 1969 she also became a computer programmer and one of the first women to create and manage a computerized accounting department, a job she held for 20 years, and graciously consulting after her retirement. Renate even succeeded in beating breast cancer. Her cheery, can-do approach to life kept her remarkably young at heart throughout 87 years. Renate achieved her dreams with zest, including trips after age 80: She walked on a snowy peak in the Grand Tetons at age 81 with her dear friend Fern; at 83 was the tour-guide to her Europe; and at 85 climbed into helicopters to tour Hawaiian islands. Renate Schuberts inspiring spirit lives on. - See more at: legacy/obituaries/heraldtribune/obituary.aspx?n=Renate-Schubert&pid=144439936#sthash.KL1VfVxU.dpuf
