My book, Folk Art in the Attic, was already at the printers when I acquired this large oil painting at a flea market. I was searching with a friend of mine and we literally saw the painting at the same time. It was propped up against the front edge of a long table and we had to wait for a moment to let people pass by before we could get to it. He picked it up from one side and I picked it up from the other. Even though you can tell that this artist had considerable artistic, if not formal training, there is a definite naivete to the work. The landscape is particularly well done especially the treatment of the island in the lake. The rendering of the men, the cabin and the canoe is quite folky, almost as if, these subjects were painted by a different artist. Regardless, the overall result is a remarkable and compelling painting. I knew the moment I saw it I wanted it, badly. Since I hadnt purchased anything else to that point, my friend graciously let me buy it. (Quebec, unsigned, oil on canvas, c. 1940.) For more stories about great finds consider purchasing my book: Folk Art in the Attic available, before Xmas, in paper back or digital version from Amazon.ca, Chapers / Indigo.ca or or directly from the author shaunmarkey@rogers (Paperback $27 includes postage)
