My breakfast date cancelled on me this morning because hes not feeling well. So I decided to make a Jack in the Box run. Some young man came in, got a complimentary glass of water and sat down at a corner table. When he walked past me, it was obvious he hadnt bathed in a LONG time. He must have not liked how he smelled either as he sprayed under his shirt with some type of deodorant. He never asked for money or anything. He just wanted some water and a cool place to hang for a while I am assuming. I thought what a shame and wondered what life path led him here. Where was his family? Friends? I emptied out my change purse and walked over to him and said Excuse me. Id like to give you something. Hold out your hand. There should be enough change there to buy yourself a chicken sandwich at least. He thanked me profusely and I came home to eat my breakfast thinking that I am lucky. Very very lucky that I had a support system that never led down that path. Wrong turns, u- turns and mis-directions on occasions? Yes. But nothing like that.
