My brother Danny shared this last night, I thought I would share - TopicsExpress

My brother Danny shared this last night, I thought I would share it with you. So tonight I attended a theater group called “Play among the Stars”. I was invited by Chris, a customer who comes to my donut shop every week. It was really more of a Christmas Concert with the typical holiday songs you would expect and between each song or skit was sung a segment of the 12 Days of Christmas. Most of the participants were well into their 20’s and maybe thirties and some I am sure as old as 60. As far as what you and I would consider true talent not a single one of them could carry a tune, keep a beat or had an ounce of rhythm. Their costumes were cheaply made and most didn’t fit. The set was almost nothing and certainly not up to par with even local community theater. But here’s the surprise……It was the most beautiful, most fulfilling most moving performance ever have I seen. You see, the cast was made up of severely mentally challenged cast members. Chris comes to my store weekly before going bowling with his group and before attending his therapy. He was so excited about his upcoming performance he was inviting everyone and that’s how I happened to go. After each “Day of Christmas” was sung, a different group would get up and do their skit. There were Toy Soldiers that were obviously either mute or could not communicate, so their part was to simply march around the stage while the toy soldier song was played by piano. Another group would simply stand there or sit in their wheelchair with their attendant by their side holding a paper snowflake while let it snow was played. Then there were 6 Skating Girls (not really skating but pretending to) the smiles on their faces convinced me that they might as well have been in the ice capades. But the moment that stirred my soul the most was when the entire group sang “O Holy Night” the actual performance could have shattered glass but to this 51 year old man it could not have been sweeter. Just when I thought my cup was overflowing, he fills it up even more.
