My brother-in-law once suggested that on just about any topic, no matter how convinced and zealous people may be, most are one or two questions from embarrassment. I think this is most true when it comes to religion and politics. The problem is when it comes to religion and politics most people have way too much of their personal identities invested to take the chance at asking serious questions, having arrangeed their beliefs like a row of dominos where if one goes down the others must follow.
