My brothers GSD, Bella (whos been staying with us for about 3 years now), was diagnosed today with DM. Im inviting his wife to the group so she can ask for any advice, but thought Id share first. I suspected DM before the visit, so wasnt really surprised, but what did surprise me is that she has no dysplasia or arthritis in her hips at all. Shes always been a little stiff and we assumed it was due to one or the other, but I guess not. Anyway- they really want to take her home with them, but I honestly dont know if shed be better off with them as an only dog or here with us with the Pack she knows. I think if we had fewer dogs, keeping her would definitely be the better option, but weve got 8 other dogs here right now (3 are fosters) so she doesnt get as much one-on-one time as Id like, and 2 of our fosters are rather.. boisterous.. and dont always watch where theyre running. Cant imagine that being run into by either of them would be good for her. Thinking maybe a joint-custody thing might work- a few weeks with them, a few with us. On the bright(ish) side, we have a trainer we know who has offered to give Bella a couple of free fitPAWS classes to help her get some exercise. Basically just stepping over low bars, or balancing on a rubber disk on the floor, or even just sitting on a raised box. And we can go over quick and easy exercises that she can do at home.
