My buddy Mark Bettinger made this list, Ive added a bit to it about hospital life. Thing Ive learned after being in the hospital Take what you want. Leave the rest. 1. You can always ask to double or triple order any portion of food. Portions are small. Time to bulk up. 2. New York is the city that never sleeps. I think hospitals are all from New York...you can sleep at discharge in your own home. 3. Speaking of discharge, it can be a day long process. Dont sit on the bed with your coat on waiting for the nurse to bring in your papers...she may be at lunch 4. Youll get lots of visitors and get tired. Sometimes you have to put up a sign that says no visitors. Your friends may or may not pay heed to the sign. Just enjoy the company. 5. Nurses are your best friend. Treat them nice and theyll bring you a cup of joe and milk around 5 am each morning without asking because they know you like coffee. Speak nice to them and theyll take care of you. 6. Be a blessing to the housekeeping staff. I think they sometimes are bored. Ask them a question and bar none, their faces light up and they get a new giddy in their step. 7. Learn to deactivate the IV pump when your line occludes and it starts beeping. Your nurses will love that they dont have to run in your room every hour. Its not rocket science folks. Watch and learn. 8. They actually start taking breakfast orders at 6:45 am, not 7 like the menu says. Be first, but be nice and youll get your food in record time. 9. Bring your own meds from home. They cant keep up with all of mine (especially my enzymes I have to take before I eat). Dont tell them though, because all meds have to be locked up in pharmacy. Ssshhhhh. 10. Last but not least, do NOT ever pass up pain meds. Do you need anything for pain? Yes, yes I do. Im not an addict but I do appreciate being able to rest in the place that never sleeps... 11. Take names. Then ask the hospital for forms to fill out of appreciation cards so that you can hand off to the supervisor. I wrote about 40 this last trip and included everyone that delivered food to the head of pulmonary. I gave credit where credit was due, not fake. But if they smiled, seemed to enjoy their job, respected protocol, I wrote a note 12. Buy your nurses coffee or have something delivered to the desk FOR THEM. Flowers, cupcakes, Gift card for ordering food. They work so hard. 13. Make a joke of the day or something to give people a reason to want to say hello. 14. Make a schedule, tack it up, and point to it. Try your best to keep to it for sanity sake. 15. Bath toys are not necessary but they are fun. Im sure all CFers agree
