My car came with 2 keys, and my wife carries the extra one. Last week, the door unlock button stopped working on her key only, and so we replaced the battery. That didnt work, so we went to the dealer, who again replaced the battery, to no avail. So the remote unlock device must be faulty. While the key still unlocks the door manually and starts the car (if you hurry up before the alarm sounds), the cost to replace it is $180. He said that keys for newer cars now cost over $300. The technology cant be too much different than a TV remote, and I can buy a universal TV remote for a buck at the Dollar Store. I remember when you could get a replacement key cut at K-mart for a quarter! The proprietary design allows them to charge hundreds of times their cost to make it. Capitalism and the profit motive may provide some benefits to the consumer, but this is not one of them.
