My career aspiration in college was to be successful in the sports - TopicsExpress

My career aspiration in college was to be successful in the sports industry, which was very hard to penetrate. The players on the field or court look like me but not on the business side. Although a man of color dominated the golf industry when I worked for the PGA TOUR, diversity was not reflective on the business side. Regardless I remained true to myself and learned the business and earned employee of the quarter one year. I worked hard to grow in the business and get myself to the next level. While working on my body of work, I felt it was important to remain true to myself. I was unapologetic to be a woman of color and my co-workers appreciated and respected that about me. Being myself has afforded me great opportunities and I have never turned me off. To this day, I continue to bring urban vernacular expressions to the workplace. That is a part of who I am, and thats important. But I know that I have to lead with my work ethics and I do just that! So the passing of Stuart Scott hurts to my soul because he was the first in the business who showed me it was okay to do you. He showed me it was okay, to say Playa Hatin Degree on the highest rated cable show. He was successful in a conservative industry and was unapologetically himself. Seeing him as an African American in the sports industry and changing journalism was inspiring. And as an African American woman in the sports industry he gave me permission to be unapologetic in an industry that wasnt use to a lil urban flair! I salute Stuart and I hope others learn to work hard and not be afraid to be themselves and not assimilate. I have learned that people respect genuine people. So my heart is heavy like I knew him because in my mind I did because he gave me confidence to be me! #iambecauseofhisinfluence #stuartscott
