My cat has gotten all political. Why is he so long winded and tells such rambling narratives? I kind of miss the days when my choices were kiss Bacon or get mauled by Bacon. Those were simpler times. Things arent as simple now, no matter how many Jimmy Stewart movies I make him watch. When Bacon came to my house to retire from his hectic life napping at Lee Harveys, I made him watch several movies. One of them was a movie you may not know unless youre an old film buff. You Cant Take It with You, is a Jimmy Stewart movie from 1938. Its not generally well known, but its funny. If you see it come on on TCM, watch it. In it, Jimmy Stewart is courting a young lady from an extremely eccentric family. In that family, they use the (willing) housecat as a paperweight. Another one I made Bacon watch was The Awful Truth, starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. Theres a cat that plays a small, but pivotal and hilarious, role in that film when Cary and Irene are stuck at a cabin. A cat holds the door to their adjoining rooms closed with his paw. Great cinema. Another cat played a great role in one of our best film noir movies, The Postman Always Rings Twice. It was 1946, and when a cat interrupted Lana Turner and John Garfields murderous plans, John Garfield said to a state trooper one of my favorite lines: Yeah. Cats. They dont know anything about electricity. I could go on and on, but I think I have already done so and so has Bacon. And were not even mentioning Bringing Up Baby.
