My child is forgetting some of his mastered flash cards during mixed trials. What do I do? We all tend to worry when this happens as our kids are meant to know all mastered flash cards by heart. Ive found that there are several reasons as to why my son forgets: - the target was hard and there arent enough duplicates amongst the mixed trial pack. I teach it again and produce more. - maintenance of cards is not being done consistently enough so the child had not seen that card for a while. This can be addressed at weekly catch ups. I must say this is rarely an issue in our program as mixed trials with mastered targets are key to teaching new skills and building behavioural momentum. - all the above were implemented correctly but the target was very hard hard and will need re-teaching. We tend to generalise each tact flash card with three non identical pictures but I might produce more, depending on the target. Sometimes they might only needed a slight promp and they will pick it up so there might be no need to remove it from the pile to re-teach. When this happens I put the particular flash cards at the front of the pile for the next therapist to collect next day and give it another go. This is a set procedure in our team. If the child continues to consistently make mistakes with a particular target we put it back on the data probe to re-teach it. We dont like it but sometimes it has to be done.
