My class this semester is silent. There are a few students, maybe 6, that speak up in class (and thank whoever for them!), but generally everyone is very reserved, which, okay, I can deal with during class. But those 10-15 minutes before class, when I show up to get the projector and all the tech going, and just settle in? Those are kinda weird minutes. They dont talk to each other, they all get there early, they dont seem to be looking at devices...they just stare at me. Ive told them that this is a little creepy. Ive showed them clips from Children of the Corn, and asked that they not do that to me, and while that got some laughs: they. still. stare. in. silence. I told them that Id start playing music in the mornings as an antidote (I think my exact statement was Im going to put on the worst Norwegian death metal I can find). And Id rather not put on the worst Norwegian death metal I can find. SO: any suggestions for tunes that relate, however tangentially, to ecocrit, or nature, or animals, or the anthropocene, or whatever you think fits! are super welcome.
