My co-author and friend Emily Liu asked me what I would have told - TopicsExpress

My co-author and friend Emily Liu asked me what I would have told my 50 year old self and would I please share that with her. I am now 69? WHAT???? Here is what I wrote: Dearest Emily, Here are some thoughts on turning 50 that I wish I had known ahead of time☺ Truthfully not sure if it would have mattered as I am a “right here right now” woman. It only becomes real when we are actually experiencing it. I could say a lot of things about paying attention to your health and staying physically active (which takes more work in your 50’s) but you already do that. The main thing I want to say about turning 50 is that it is the beginning of the most liberating time in your life! I can honestly say that I loved the 50’s and here is why: You are at home in your own skin. Instead of walking into a room and being concerned about what people will think of you, you walk into a room and decide what you might think of them. Not in an arrogant way, but you are clear about what kind of people you want to be around. What you do with your time and who you do it with is a priority. You do not stay in conversations that you do not enjoy or feel interested in just to be polite. Looking as good as you can is fun and a mood changer, but in fact, no matter how many wrinkles you get, people will be surprised when you tell them how old you are, if your energy is certain, alive purposeful. My BFF who you know Emily Gates is the model for exactly this. Always have a goal that matters to you. Even if you miss it, the journey to that goal is invigorating. You can make an impact. People listen to 50 year olds. Pick a cause that matters to you and make a difference. There will be great moments , stop and let them in. There will be big challenges, know that you will figure them out. People you love will die. Stop and experience the suffering. Then figure out a way to make that persons life part of your everyday. A partner in life makes the good times better and the bad times tolerable. You will know for sure who your “real” friends are. Find a place that feels like home and create a sanctuary. You can do the most important work of your life in the next ten years if you listen for your true passion. Love U Kelly
