My cobbler, who is of Indonesian descent, sits in his office at the corridor of Ambank Solaris daily, repairing shoes. Anybody that passes by will be greeted with his infectious smile even as the sun scorches his skin or the rain wets his little workstation, happily mending things and doing small talk with his clients that passes by. He may not be financially sufficient but he has never charged too high. He looks happy doing this although we know he is struggling to make ends meet. As the world passes by around him, he doesnt forget to say his blessings eventhough his clients are more well heeled than him, so to speak. But he doesnt compare and sulk. No, he makes others, who are better off than him, feel very special to him, each and every time, and sometimes you just cant resist but to sit down to chat with him about life. He sends me a lot of positive vibes and even my children feels his positiveness. Yesterday, I asked if he could mend my son Mikhails school bag which tore apart at the belt buckle and there was no way anyone could have fixed it short of having to buy a new bag. But he said, he would do some magic to it. When I went to pick it up with Mikhail, he beckoned my son, and said, Pakcik dah baiki beg Miki, pak cik nak mintak adik Miki janji sama pak cik, adik Miki akan belajar rajin rajin dan jangan lupa ulang kaji pelajaran. He looked at me and said, saya hadiahkan upah saya pada adik Miki. I insisted on paying him but he refused. It made me realise all the more that money cannot give us happiness but its these small little simple deeds that makes the best gifts. Not material wealth. That wont last. This will linger on and on in my memory more than any gifts I have received.
