My colleague, the Thai Consul General in Kunming, presented a lovely gift to me last Friday -- a durian. Its fruit that smells like hell and tastes like heaven. Our driver carried the fruit in the car and the car became smelly like an old unclean dustbin. I didnt dare to take it home, so we kept it in the office during the weekend and this Monday we found that the whole office became smelly like, well I cant describe. Our Chinese staff members strongly advised that we dispose it off 20 miles away from our neighborhood, but our Bangladeshi colleagues opined that we must try it before discarding. So I just had a piece of durian for the first time in my life. Its sweet and tastes a bit like jackfruit. It looks like jackfruit as well, but the taste is sweeter and more intense ...and how shall I say ... Okay, OVERPOWERING! Lets talk a bit about jackfruit. I hate jackfruit for many reasons. Firstly, for its strong queer smell and secondly for its look ( its ugly). Finally, you need to follow the most difficult and messy process to consume it. You put it in your mouth and half of the slimy thing will go straight into your throat automatically even before you attempt to swallow it, and the other half will remain in your mouth to let you munch unnecessarily. Then you will feel that it the part that went into your throat has not reached your stomach, its hanging halfway into your throat-pipe because its still attached to the other haft thats in your mouth by some strong fruity fibers. How other people react to this I dont know, but when it happens to me I feel like throwing up. So I havent had our national fruit for ages. So durian-- King of fruits! Yes, its sweet and tasty if you can tolerate the strong odour of a dozen rotten onions. Those who can eat it, love it. Those who cant appreciate the smell, just hate it. Either black or white, no grey. And dont ask me which group I belong to: Tongue or nose. I wont answer. However, I thank my Thai friend for giving me an opportunity to taste the most interesting fruit in the world. Shall I recommend or serve this fruit to my friends? Well, it will depend on which sensory system of your body and psyche will prove stronger-- gustaoception or olfacoception. You decide.
