My column this week in the Petit Jean Headlight: A Scary World We live in a scary world. It should not come as a surprise to any of us. The world has been a scary place every since Adam and Eve sinned against God. It just seems scarier now than ever before. Hardly a week goes by anymore without a mass shooting taking place, especially at schools. Many people want to blame many different things for the increase in school shootings. Some place the blame on lack of gun control; others place the blame on lack of security. I tend to think that the increase in school shootings can be directly traced to the increase in violent video games and movies, but that is just my opinion. By the way, the rating system for games and movies is a complete joke when parents disregard the ratings and buy their children games they should not be playing and take them to movies they should not be watching! As children all over this nation will be going out “trick or treating” this week, it is not the dressed up ghosts and goblins they must fear, but the lack of parental discretion and control that allows them to watch the horror movies and play the violent games that desensitizes their minds against violence and death. We must remember, as Paul writes in Ephesians 6:12-13, “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, stand firm.” It is a scary world out there and the only way to stand firm against it is to equip yourself with the “full armor of God.” Instead of violent video games and horror movies, why not spend some time in God’s Word this week.
