My comment: We need to stop any extension of the gas grid and any investment in gas infrastructure. The European Commission provides funding for energy infrastructure projects, many of which lock us into a fossil-fuelled future. See list of projects here: ec.europa.eu/energy/infrastructure/pci/doc/2013_pci_projects_country.pdf Mr Kelly will be hearing from us! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kerry Group is one of the biggest supporters of the project in a bid to secure a gas supply for its massive Listowel plant, the biggest single industrial operation in north Kerry. The company says any move to gas in Listowel would protect the hundreds of jobs there by lowering its massive energy costs. Its proposed to bring the gas in on a 26km-long pipeline between Foynes and Tarbert and to extend this into Listowel, initially. Planning permission and the land for the route already exists, obtained by company Shannon LNG from An Bord Pleanála in 2008. It would be a huge asset to us if we could power our Listowel plant using gas as it is more efficient and cleaner than other fossil fuels. Were at a big disadvantage as it is, without gas, Kerry Group Director of Corporate Affairs Frank Hayes told The Kerryman. Kerry Group is already preparing to make the change at the Listowel site and have urged Bord Gáis to progress the plans as fast as possible. Ireland South MEP Seán Kelly, a member of the European Parliaments Industry and Energy Committee, told The Kerryman he will support the move to the hilt under plans to redraw the EUs energy policy commencing shortly. How the pipeline would be funded is the big question at the moment, but I expect positive news in the not-too distant future and I will be doing my best to make sure it happens, Mr Kelly told The Kerryman. The plans are well underway now. From a Kerry and Irish point of view it would be very important by offering a cheaper alternative for struggling business and industry. Getting on the grid would also attract spin-off industry, Mr Kelly added.
