My company is producing this book in audio come February 2015, and I can say its probably the book with which I am most proud to be associated in my entire 15 years at Recorded Books. Bill Browder grew up in a family of American communists and intellectuals, against whom he rebelled by becoming one of the first capitalist investors into Russia after the end of Communism. He made billions of dollars by taking on and exposing the Russian oligarchs’ corruption in the nineties, all the while operating under the Eye of Sauron gaze of Vladimir Putin, little realizing how their interests were conjoined. That all changed when Putin won his battle with the oligarchs, and Bill Browder was no longer so convenient. Bill’s Russian visa was withdrawn and it was then that group of corrupt Russian government officials perpetrated a brilliant scam to steal $230 million. But for a billionaire like Bill Browder, that was only money. Matters really turned serious when Sergei Magnitsky, Bill’s young lawyer in Moscow, exposed that fraud, was arrested, and was beaten to death Gulag-style in a Russian prison. As Bill says, his entire life turned on that moment. Bill set out to achieve justice for Sergei and his family, shutting down his company and turning himself into a human rights’ entrepreneur. Even more amazing, Bill then persuaded the American government to pass the Magnitsky Act, criminalizing all those involved in the United States, and has just succeeded in getting the European parliament to pass a similar act a month ago. No-one has ever done anything like this before, anywhere in the world, and that’s what has made him Vladimir Putin’s public enemy #1. RED NOTICE is Bill Browder’s story. This is the book that tells the world where the bodies are buried in the Putin regime, figuratively and literally. And Bill’s campaign continues, for he is now tracking down and persuading governments all over the world to seize any foreign assets of the 32 officials involved in Sergei Magnitsky’s death and the original $230 million fraud. The story is important and timely, but also immensely gripping, with all the twists and turns of a first-rate thriller. Michael Lewis and Ben Mezrich are over-used comparisons, but they hold up, and there are also echoes here of THE FIRM and ALL THE PRESIDENTS MEN. This is a fantastic book that everyone should read, but Ill warn you: Youre going to really, really hate Putin.
