My cop story :-) Last night we were cruising on Hwy 18 from Garrison on our way to Brainerd. Speed limit is 55. I normally drive 5 mph over the speed limit since cops wont pull you over for that slight infraction. But I was drifting at around 65 because the car ahead of me was doing around 70. It was dark and foggy out and a car passed by in the opposite lane. In my rear view mirror, I saw him turn around and I knew it was a cop. I told Nan and Kina there was a cop coming up behind me and I was probably going to get pulled over...which is exactly what happened. I was bummed...I havent had a speeding ticket in over 30 years of driving. The cop was a Crow Wing county cop in a black and white SUV, He was courteous, like they usually are, asked me the usual questions - where I was from and where I was going, told me he pulled me over doing 65 and asked if I was distracted or not paying attention to the speed limit. I gave him my license, insurance card and he asked me about my driving record - I told him I had a clean record. He went back to his cruiser and I was imagining him writing out a ticket and wondering how much it would cost. He came back, smiled, handed me my license and said: Im giving you a verbal warning. Stay at the speed limit because its foggy and its better to be safe than sorry. You want to make sure you get to where you are going I thanked him and went on my way - at the speed limit. I know there are good cops and bad cops. Ive had my experiences with both. I thought for sure I was going to get a ticket. After all, I was a Native driving in an area known for its racism. Maybe he decided not to give me a ticket because I had a clean record. I dont know. What I do know is that that this cop was one of the good cops. And Im glad the manidoog were watching over me.
