My current band - The Sighs of Monsters - covering a song by my first band - The Leather Omnibus. Unfortunately in the late 80s, we didnt have the facilities to make the quality recordings technology today has afforded us. The only recording of this song was a live one recorded at the famous Jamesons club in Commissioner Street, Johannesburg, in December 1989. In this new version, TSOM does its best to do a Crazy Horse. Some background to the song: It was written by Leon Lazarus, the bass player for TLO about a friend of his. In the 1980s, white South African boys were expected to do two years service in the military after high school in what was essentially a civil war. Leon and I were part of a lucky group who were granted university deferrals after which we ducked and dived the law long enough for conscription to be abolished ahead of the democratic elections in 1994. Unfortunately, not all of our generation were as lucky, and, those like the Gary of this song were severely damaged by the experience. Leons heartfelt lyrics have always moved me and although that period of history is mercifully a quarter century behind us, this remains a song I think is worth hearing today. So, on a rainy Sunday evening in London with a little extra time on our hands, The Sighs of Monsters produced this version.
