My dad was born in 1896. He was brought up in B.C. Canada. Like many others he lied about his age to enlist in the Canadian Infantry. His embarkation papers state he left from Halifax N.S. to join the allied forces in The Great War . In WW2 he was in the Royal Engineers as a Sgt Major. He never spoke about the wars. I asked him once about them and all he would say is that he lost many good friends. I did not pursue it because I could see the pain in his eyes. I do not know where or what horrors he endured but to me he was,and always will be, a hero. Tomorrow, as I do every year, Ill pay my respects to those who fell and also those whose lives were ruined by the obscenity of war. Ill try to ignore any mention of the word glory because its bullshit. Ive never talked to any old soldiers who saw any glory in it whatsoever. It was horror. Ive been to the poppy display at the Tower of London. Its stunning, emotional and tastefully done. Ive listened to the official song (a version of Eric Bogles No Mans Land). Its dreadful. It manages to strip all the emotion out of the song and omits the anti war verses completely. By all means give to the Poppy Fund if you wish but buy the original. Eric is the best songwriter I have ever heard. If you need convincing, have a listen to this (you will cry) and remember also that humans were not the only victims. For ALL who fell: may the human race never forget and one day learn. youtube/watch?v=hniMrGeF4us
