My daughter Mackenzie shared her journal entry with me. It touched me so much that I got her permission to share it with you... 5/28/14: My heart is sad today as I learned of the passing of the incredible Dr. Maya Angelou. Ive felt a mix of emotion all day, because she was such a light of goodness and hope in the world, and I cant help but feel her absence as if I truly knew her. But she believed in the power of words and used hers to inspire love and kindness in other people; and, as such, her presence will never truly be gone. Just like all the other great poets, writers, activists and peacemakers of history, it is now our responsibility to carry her words on to the next generation; sharing her story of overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds, through love, joy, and determination. Its up to us to pass on to our children that each of us is human and therefore apart of and capable of the acts of any other human. You must love the murderer and the thief because their humanness is a part of all of us. But even more, you must look at the greatest of humanity - Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Theresa, Eleanor Roosevelt, Mahatma Ghandi - and know that if they can do it, you can do it, because their humanness is also a part of you. We, as people, have to try to be a light in the world. We wont always succeed, but we must try, every day, to be the rainbow in someone elses cloud. We must raise good, caring men, and strong, phenomenal women, who love themselves, faults and all. We must dare to love. We must tell our children that they are worth something, that they can be a force of goodness in the world, so that they might dare to believe it. Those are her words that wed be sharing, but she gave them to us in order to share them. And if we continue to share her words, her legacy, we might just leave the world a slightly more understanding place for our children. Words are things, Im convinced. You must be careful about the words you use - or the words you allow to be used in your house. In [the Bible] we are told...that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God and the Word was with God...Words are things, you must be careful... Someday well be able to measure the power of words. I think they are things, I think they get on the walls, they get in your wallpaper, they get in your rugs, and your upholstery, and in your clothes, and finally into you. ~ MA
