My daughter came out to visit for the extended weekend and is going to early vote at the Registrar tomorrow before returning to NYU. In the spirit, here are my recommendations for the ballot in South San Diego & CA: Governor - Jerry Brown - WITHOUT Question. I dont agree with every single thing our Gov does (he vetoed 2 of my bills!!!!!!) -- but he has done more for working class folks, immigrants & the environment than any Governor in my lifetime. He is the real deal and, next to Joe Biden, the cutest old man Democrat around. Lt. Gov. - Gavin Newsom- of course. The guy running against him is LOCO and Gavin continues to impress me. Im not even taken with his good looks anymore, he is just a solid Democrat. AG - Kamala D. Harris - A Girls Girl. I love this woman! She is strong, smart and committed to choice and immigrants. Go Kamala! Secretary of State - Alex Padilla - Come on... the guy passed a Plastic Bag Ban in California and is an MIT grad. Smart, strong, principled and LATINO... no complaints here. Insurance Commissioner - Dave Jones is the guy. His opponent called my sick day legislation fake compassion... enough said. Controller - Betty Yee for Controller 2014 -- this lady is too smart! No question she will continue to bring progressive, disciplined leadership to this office. Love her. Treasurer - John Chiang - dont even get me started on John Chiang. The single most underestimated statewide elected official in our state. He is the best. I would vote for him for just about anything - smart, tested, and real. Board of Equalization, 4th District - Diane Harkey - I know she is a Republican BUT I served with her and cant stop myself from liking her. She will do a good job and he will win. She will advocate for taxpayers with killer outfits and shoes to match. Got to love it. Congress - Juan Vargas. My single most favorite Congressman. He is for immigrants, the poor, was a Jesuit, has a fabulous family (incredible wife) and respects women more than anyone I know. Wouldnt have run for the Assembly without his urging. Love him. State Senate 40th District - Ben Hueso -- I love voting for my Senator. He has great values, represents our district incredibly and is thoughtful & smart. Yep, I will always be for Ben! State Assembly 80th District - Lorena Gonzalez - I mean ... you really dont have a choice since I am running unopposed... still, I have done my best this year and hope you will consider supporting me. State Superintendent - tough one... but I am sticking with Tom Torlakson... I will continue to fight the Department of Ed on their approach to English Language Learners, but I will not give this vote up to his opponent who attacks our teachers. Im for kids, teachers and parents... Im for Tom. YES on Props 1 & 2 - Some of the best work we did this year!!! No on Prop 46 - Not the time to tinker with healthcare... our district needs healthcare professionals, we cant push them out with out of control costs! Thats all I can do for one night. If you have additional questions about other races.... let me know!
