My daughter was four years old when I started dating her daddy! She already had a diagnosis of autism. At that point in her life she had one phrase that she used. Good girl and she said it repeatedly. I would take her places and people would laugh and comment about having our own cheering section. That was one of my biggest challenges in falling in love. I had to fall in love with this sweet angel before I could fall in love with her father, because I knew saying yes to him meant saying yes to her. I had a lot of fears, I worried about never being able to hold a real conversation with her, not being able to talk about all the cute boys in her class and wondering about what she was thinking or how she was feeling. I wanted those things with her and I was scared and worried I would never have them. She will be six at the end of this month and she has come so far from good girl! Although, she is the BEST girl! I guess I just had to learn how to get on her level. learn how to communicate her way and accept her 100% as who she is. It was clear to me then that Autism was and is a permanent thing, that she wasnt going to all of a sudden turn 10 and it would go away. It will be a mountain to climb her whole life, but Im excited that I get to climb it with her! I love you Arwyn!
