My day… Enjoyed the beautiful snow this morning and met one of my former students, Carla Campbell Warren, who had a thoughtful gift and delicious Christmas goodies not only for me, but for the staff at the Burlington Pet Adoption Center. Went to Petsense Mebane to Christmas shop for my dogs and ran into Margo Gurganious Roberts who left a bag of doggie treats for me at the check out before she walked out the door. Thanks Margo! While at the adoption center, I saw Phyllis Haynes who has been my friend since we were 5 years old. She was adopting an adorable little dog that needed her so badly. It was wonderful to visit with her and see how much she loved her new baby. Got a video and pics of an ACD mix that I hope another friend will be adopting. Trish is in WVA reuniting a dog with his owner that we have worked with since the summer. Go Team Happy Chances! Then I pull in the driveway and get a phone call from an adopter telling me that she has to return a dog immediately. I cant go into detail here but not the dogs fault. Do we have anywhere to put the dog? Of course not. We had another return this week too. Sadly, that happens in rescue. But you dont want two returns days before Christmas and especially when you are trying to find homes for shelter dogs for Christmas. I was so disheartened that I laid my head down on the steering wheel and prayed for strength. Walked into the house to a stack of Christmas cards. One was from one of my former fosters, Peanut, now Henley Lindner (Jodi Rizzo Lindner) along with a donation. Thanks Jodi and Henley! I might add that Ive received several cards and updates from past adopters and it does my heart good to see their happy faces! Then I got to a card from my dear friend, Julie Negley (Ted Negley). She wrote me the sweetest note about how much she appreciated what I do for the dogs and sent a donation to our rescue. That is when I totally and completely fell apart. I cried so hard that Todd thought something awful had happened. This girl has had a rough year. Most of you know that because Ive asked for prayer for her enough times and will continue to do so. But here she is thinking of someone else and doing for others. It totally humbled me and overwhelmed me. I wish that all of you could know how much doing a kindness for someone can make a difference. I hope that I dont embarrass any of these people by mentioning their names, but know that today….well today…I was so overwhelmed by what I couldnt do that I didnt even want to get up this morning. I knew there were dogs that I couldnt save and my house was not clean, and laundry was undone, and I had a To Do List a mile long and I was exhausted. Please know that your timing was perfect. You never know what a difference you may make in someones life. Dont miss out on an opportunity to do even the smallest of gestures for someone. I, for one, will try to pay it forward. And that my friends is what it is all about...
