My dear European-envying American friends: please stop posting memes that say German universities are FREE or Denmark offers FREE healthcare. There is no such thing as FREE. The citizens of those countries pay half or more than half their income in taxes. My Danish friends, a doctor and an engineer, have been paying 60% of their income for 20 years. So yes, their daughters go to university and grad school without additional payment, because their parents have already paid for it. Again, there is no such thing as FREE and every time I hear someone try to say so, I begin to feel like a curmudgeonly right-wing realpolitik type. Which is not how I ever want to feel, thank you very much.
