My dear Folks When I read about austerity in the corridors of Government proposed by PM,I remember a leaf from the great Saga about Chanakya and how he defines austerity in running a Govt. Megasthenes,the Ambassador appointed by Selucus,the Greek Emperor, to the Court of King Chandra Gupta Mourya, called on Chanakya in his humble hut.He got two oil lamps in his room and one was lit.Great Chanakya asked the Greek, Is it an official visit or personal visit? He replied- Acharya,its a personal calling on.Chanakya put off that lamp and lit the other one. The curious Megasthenes asked him the reason and he replied they are identical my friend,but the previous one contains oil supplied by the Kings palace and this one has oil bought by me.Why should I expend State resources for my personal meeting? The Greek said O Acharya,I came to learn few lessons of State Craft from you.Thanks,I got my first lesson.
