My dear friend, Gordon Hayberg, Pastor of Family Life at Cornerstone Church, wrote this after his father died last evening. Moving, instructive, incredibly helpful. As I pray for Gordon and his family, I am thankful for this godly son and his example to all of us: Today I lost my Dad. My brother Lewis Hayberg, my sister Kimmie Hoch and I learned he was in the hospital this past Thursday with an aggressive form of liver cancer. This was no surprise to our Heavenly Father though. This past June, my dad called me on the day of my daughter, Brooklyns, 1 yr birthday party. I invited him to come and he did. He was able to talk with my mother, whom he had not seen in 20 years. He shared memories with my sister and other family members. The next day was Fathers Day. I invited him to come hear me speak and he came. It was the first time he had ever heard me preach. Weeks later he would rave about Cornerstone Church and how much he loved being there. These were special blessings from God. I was honored to be able to see him again this past Friday Morning. God gave me the privilege of serving him one last time. I ordered his breakfast, helped him into his chair and walked him to the bathroom. My dad was not able to teach me all the things a son would have hoped to learn. For a long time I thought I was at a complete loss. Then I had my own children. I began to see things in me that I once saw in my dad. He would look at me and say, Hey Gordy...I love you. I do that to my kiddos regularly. He would play games with me and let me ask weird questions. Oh yes... Trevor does the same to me. I am forever grateful that Lewis Martin Hayberg, Jr. was my dad. Father God, Thank you for my dad. He was not perfect, he was not organized or even overly spiritual, but he was mine. Please greet him slowly as he gets confused easily. Please comfort his wife, Annette, in her time of grief and give her peace. God I ask you to use this challenging situation to draw our family closer to you and then closer to each other. In Jesus Name... AMEN!
