My dearest friends, I was able to see Sammy yesterday & spend time with his family. Though folks had told me to prepare myself, I can tell you that nothing could have prepared me for what I saw when I was in that ICU unit. Because of that, I will not post those details here. I will be happy to share more with you if you would like to speak with me personally. Sufficed to say, those moments with Sammy taught me that he is a fighter and his wife must be one of the strongest people I know. I can only hope and pray that being able to talk to/be with Sammy for that brief time did him some good. Unfortunately, yesterday was a roller coaster day for Sammy. The events of the day are too lengthy for me speak of here, but I do want to continue to provide you with the most current information I have. Due to some unpleasant circumstances last night, the family was informed that Sammy would immediately have to be taken off the bypass machine and that the mechanical heart pump & heart transplant surgeries were no longer an option for him. These were options that had been described as his best, if not only, chance for survival only hours earlier. Thankfully, after being taken off the machines, Sammys heart continues to function under its own power with the help of a basic ventilator and some very powerful medications. After a restless night, theyre working to prevent the onset of pneumonia & they are monitoring him now for signs of brain activity. So that is where we stand now. I know your continuing prayers are so appreciated. At some point later today, I will be posting a link (perhaps multiple links) where you can donate money to the family. As you can imagine, theyre going to need some financial help to get them through this unbelievably difficult time.
