My director, Claudia Capon in the Colegio Christa McAuliffe I founded in Mexico City, told me of an interesting development she observed in a 4-year-old she was teaching to feel the sandpaper numbers.Claudia was giving this little boy the “way to feel the number and write it in the sand tray” lesson. Using the dominant hand (his right), she carefully felt the number with her index finger, then reproduced the number in the sand tray. When she indicated that he could do it, she was amazed to see him use the inside side of his thumb to feel the number and try to produce it in the sand. She commented to me, “Beverley, he was using his thumb in the same position that the children use when playing on the pad of the video games and cell phone.” I wonder if this is going to be a common thing and, if so, what will be the future of the use of the hand? I think this may be an interesting area to research. Beverley Blount
