My doctor friend Michelle says I can take paracetamol or I can drink wine. Not both. I need a new hip and I like to run. My experiment on the pain killing properties of red wine has now concluded. It works for mild pain. This means I can sleep with some mild hip pain after running. After a lot of running I have more than mild pain and I cant sleep. With this in mind, I did something sensible today which would probably surprise Michelle. We drove up the cliffs to look at the beautiful views. In the first photo, the landscape rises to a high hill which has been eaten away by intense wave action. I.e. it is not a plateau. A dirt road leads up a long steadily incline to the cliff top. Instead of running I decided to do interval hills on my bike. It turned out to be a good idea because I was listening to Aleks music and watching the magnificent view on a cloudless day. Well, hills are often spoken of being steep because of how they feel when you ride uphill. On the way down I gave the bike its head and when I was going quite fast I hit a patch of very fine soft sand that had encroached onto the road. Your front wheel slows alarmingly and the back one, if it isnt lined up exactly, will try and overtake the front wheel. In effect, this made me realise hills look a hell of a lot steeper from this point of view than when you ride up them. Anyway, I was riding Aleks mountain bike and it made me remember what he always told me. He said go fast through soft sand and keep your wheels straight. I remembered all the dirt tracks wed ridden on together and I had a tear for Aleks for the first time in quite a while.
