My earliest memory in life, as of now, is horrifically looking out - TopicsExpress

My earliest memory in life, as of now, is horrifically looking out of the slit of a door, at my mother and others bursting anaar crackers. I was just about a year old and that memory has persisted through 27 years, because I remember the absolute terror and shock it taught me. The only other memory I have from that night is howling under the bed, alone with my dog, while the sounds deafened us. It took my mother many years to realize that her daughter was abnormal and ritually sent me to Kolkata around this time every year, after the Bengal government mandated a decibel limit on their crackers. Diwali, to me, has always sounded like a horrific celebration of bombs. The only moments I could appreciate the festival-of-lights part is when I saw aerial images of India during the festival. For all those of you for who it has been a better experience, I wish you a very very happy Diwali :) #MyDiwaliBreak
