My email to BBC 4. You can email you opinion @: channel4/4viewers/contact-us Dear BBC Four, I am a long fan of British television and film especially its comedies. I watched every episode I could get of “Red Dwarf”, “Yes Minister” and many others. I avidly follow “Ripper Street”, “Copper” and “Sherlock”. I am extremely concerned at the news that BBC Four is considering doing a comedy about the Irish Potato Famine in the style of the American TV show, “Shameless”. How any “Civilized” company can see humor in over 1,000,000 Irish starving to death, hundreds of thousands of Irish forcibly evicted from their homes by English landlords and the decimation by emigration of more than a million Irish from their homeland. Britain has never accepted responsibility for the Crown and British Government’s culpability in exacerbating the Famine. While millions of Irish starved English landlord backed by their government exported millions of tons of beef, pork, corn and grain to Britain. My great Grandfather, Michael emigrated from Ireland at the height of this famine. He was lucky and built a new life here. Comedy can heal wound or it can make them worse. Would the BBC make fun of a Jewish family in the Holocaust or Welsh minors during the Pit Closings? I doubt it. What is it that makes you think making a TV show about a dysfunctional Irish family faced with famine is OK? Is the BBC that insensitive to Irish Catholic feeling about the Famine? Don’t do the program and accept Britain’s responsibility for the devastating Famine. W,A. McLaughlin
