My family and I spent yesterday at the Dallas World Aquarium. Matter of a fact we spent the day with about 2000 other people at the aquarium, but that’s another story for a different day. The aquarium itself is both inspiring and sad at the same time. It was inspiring because of the vast array and beauty of all the different animals that reside within the exhibits. They truly reminded me of the beauty and diversity of God’s creations. It was almost like witnessing a kaleidoscope of our world as first described in Chapter 1 of the Book of Genesis. The aquarium was at the same time depressing as the animals were on display and not free in their native habitats. While they remain alive in their exhibits, I wondered if they were truly “living” as they were supposed to be. We too our like this, we often exist without living and we frequently feel on display instead of living freely as we would like to. How do we get out of this rut, how do we go from living in confines behind the gates of the display to living freely outside of the gates? The answers to such questions are both complex and individual. There is no one answer, neither God nor our neighbors can tell us how to live our lives; the only one which can do this is ourselves. For some it may be a walk in nature, a good book, for many sports, hobbies or religion brings a sense of wholeness, and there are numerous other ways to find ones path. All I can suggest is that the needle of our compasses be moral and honest, for with these foundations we will be able to find our paths both within and outside the exhibits of life.
