My family is from Jingzhou, which is in Hubei Province, near Wuhan. Our city is one of the cities mentioned in the “Three Kingdoms”, a famous Chinese classic. I have a younger sister, and our father was disappointed not to have a son, but he is OK with it now. I feel very close to my grandparents, and my grandfather especially had a big impact on me. He was humble and hardworking. Though only educated through primary school, he became an accountant and later was successful as a farmer and businessman, producing and selling cotton and rapeseed. My mother’s parents had three children and eventually were separated. Unfortunately, my parents got into the habit of playing mahjong and gambling. This put financial pressure on them as their losses mounted, and they fought and blamed each other for their circumstances. I don’t ever want to quarrel when I am married because of what we experienced in my family. I have a boyfriend whom I am committed to, but we live in different provinces and both have a strong desire and feeling of responsibility to care for our parents when they are old, so that is a problem for us. Neither of us wants to move away from our parents! At the moment I am a teacher in one of the top English language schools in China. I enjoy helping my students, but I find it difficult communicating with parents when we have to give them progress reports about their own kids. One day I hope I can be a freelance translator and perhaps have my own cafe that I can work out of. I often think a lot about life. In China we need to develop a higher level of ethics and to learn how to share and help each other more. We need to have greater trust between people. I like it when people confide in me, although I have a hard time expressing my own thoughts to other people. Wang Wei Fang (Vivi)
