My family moved to Central Florida at a time(I was four) when there were no warnings, no disclaimers, very few rules and certainly much less traffic. I loved the clear, cold water of Rock springs, the jungle like forest and the element of danger provided by the presence of water moccasins, rattlesnakes, alligators and gar fish lurking just outside the realm of human activity. I remember the palm bushes shaded by great oak trees and gently swaying mantles of Spanish moss. I grew up without Space Mountain/Disney, but found absolute ecstasy in floating down the springs. I was always in ah by how orange trees managed to grow in such perfect, abundant rows along the roadside. I grew up full of wonder at the abundance of life found everywhere you looked. But, if you want the gospel truth about them early days and my part in them, you best get a good hold on that chair ‘cause my life was a wild ride starting the moment the gate swung open. For me, Florida had it all… We had animals that could kill you, in any environment. Hell, we had plants that will kill you too. Bears, Florida panthers, alligators, crocodiles, sharks (all sorts), Coral snakes, three types of rattler, Water Moccasins, Copperheads, Black Widow spiders, brown recluses, scorpions (more of a nuisance than deadly), large pythons, fire ants (yes, enough of them together can kill), jellyfish, and several species of wasp that cant kill, but can make your life miserable for a few weeks (velvet ants are the worst). And I LOVED them all.. (well, not the spiders) Just the beginning
