My fascination with other cultures continues unabated - and, no, Im not talking about that land of mystery the Indians called Wisconsin. Japan has some strange Christmas traditions. Thats ok, its not their holiday so they sort of just threw together what they liked and called it: Kurisumasu (Christmas!)!! So, it all started back in WWI when some German soldiers ended up as prisoners (bet those guys never expected to end up in Japan) in Japan. The soldiers were bored and put on concerts for themselves. Since this was approximately 1916 the vast majority of Japanese citizens had never heard Beethoven. To say they were mesmerized is an understatement. They were in love and remain so a century later. Beginning the month before Christmas and continuing to the end of the year Japans finest opera singers will perform to sold out shows around the country. It is a beautiful piece of music. Enjoy. https://youtube/watch?v=X6s6YKlTpfw
