My father-in-law was the comedian Don Adams. He had a buddy named Freddie Metchik. They had been friends since before time. They spent their lives together, bet probably millions at the track, and laughed away maybe sixty years or more together. Their children even married each other. When I first met Freddie, I thought maybe there was something wrong with him. He talked like he had difficulty putting words together. I wondered what a rifle-wit like Don saw in him, because Freddie talked so slow, it seemed he must BE slow. But then I realized that Freddie was an aural, rather than optical, illusion. He was almost as quick as Don, but he bided his time and was a master of the nearly impossible -- the slow zinger. What I came to know and love about Freddie was his heart, a great heart, a big heart filled with love. Freddie adored my wife Cecily Adams, and I know his heart was broken like all of ours when she left us so early. Freddie was active on Facebook, and among the greatest joys I have received were his frequent loving reminders of Cecily and things he recalled of her. I know Freddie lost his dearest friend when Don died in 2005, but happily for them, though sadly for us, they are now reunited. That great loving heart of Freddies stopped yesterday. He was 88. I will miss him immensely.
