My father returned home from the war in June of 1945, wounded, - TopicsExpress

My father returned home from the war in June of 1945, wounded, victorious, having lost many friends and comrades, but all of them granted us the freedom we enjoy today. Yes there are many things wrong with our society but stop for just a minute and think what it would be like if Hitler succeeded. This is what they fought against, world domination and oppression. He returned to a letter written on behalf of the community he defended. I have posted this letter here. The most striking phrase to me is, “We remember well the dark days when you went out to defend our country, and how victory gradually emerged from almost certain defeat”. They were dark times. That’s what ‘Lest We Forget’ is all about! If we allow the reality of the horror of this time to fade we may face it again. My mother also gathered people from the streets and took them into the air raid shelters where she and others had hung black curtains to block the light from the German pilots. Then she would go out to the hills and light candles to indicate a different target. My gratefulness for these courageous acts from all our veterans is expressed in my daily celebration of the life I am able to lead. I will not forget, I will not forget them, I will not forget to immediately stand against the slightest hint of injustice, dictatorship or oppression, I think it’s the best way I can honor them, I will not forget.
