My father used to be very particular about my beard as fathers would any serious religious obligation. I felt my father was beginning to become unnecessarily domineering even in issues I saw as personal. I have not left mine, who are you to leave yours? he would say. God gave me this beard father, not us. I think he knows Im old enough to have it thats why he gave me. Moreover, what to do with ones beard is a matter of style, I would reply. You are not old enough to keep it son, he would tell me. I used to feel my father was only being particular about the wrong things. And I used to think that issue was peculiar to him until lately. I went to him and asked him why he usually ask me to cut my beard just because he doesnt feel like keeping his. He told me that in Tangale culture, you dont keep beard when your own father has cut his. I was stupefied.
