My favorite # 12 :- Mercedes Benz type 300SL ( 1954- 1963) **** What is more it was not simply the FIRST, but half a century later it remains one of the BEST!! ***** It came loaded with TECHNICAL & AESTHETIC innovations ...... All parts of the DESIGN are done with Purpose ------ From Anodized aluminum belt and trim moldings, the slight use of adornments and knobs-- either to cover seems in the panel, or permit access to the structure, It had the FIRST * Fuel Injection system* in a series production Car, for example an out put of 215 Hp from a 3000cc unit remarkably top speed of 250 Kmph . I think 300 SL is exceptional , bcoz it was fully *SYNTHESIZED Design* and stood ahead of the Cars of its time........More important though was its light weight space frame that extended up its flanks, preventing the use of *Conventional doors* , Confronted with this problem, Merc designers struck up a * Gullwing* Solution, with doors opening upwards from the Roof !!, perhaps the companys achievement was making the Doors & body integrated ........The WINGS look as if they were created at the beginning of the design process to brand the Car { Rakshit ShastryMahidhar Mv.....Did you guys felt about this before ...??} rather than *Slotted to fit the frame *, but by building so Gullwings became an Instant Icon !! I was privileged to cling to a *300SL* of early 60s twice when I only knew ....Benz & Gullwings are from heaven .....but even now I live with the memories .....still one Silver winged lovable devil in my City is scorching the streets now & than
