My favorite part: When we protest and rally, news cameras show up. News cameras rarely show up when we’re volunteering our time to work with young kids. News cameras don’t show up when we put on art & poetry shows or peaceful music events. But whenever people get uncomfortable, a camera shows up to document it. Protests force people to think about things that they’re privileged enough NOT to have to think about. In reality, many of us who DO protest are privileged enough not to have to think about those things either—if we chose not to. After all, if you’re impoverished, or abused, or working three jobs to survive, or incarcerated, or starving, or physically impaired, you probably don’t have the time or ability to protest and rally in the first place. Many of the people we’re advocating for aren’t able to advocate on their own behalf, and that’s a big part of why we do it.
