My favorite song. I love the way the music keeps shifting - TopicsExpress

My favorite song. I love the way the music keeps shifting harmonically to match the lyric: If you should (D chord, though with a A note in the bass-thus decentered from the very beginning) ever leave me (two MINOR chords: B minor, followed by a surprising F# minor) well life would still go on, believe me (B MAJOR [though somewhat unstable, with an F# bass note] to reflect the ray of hope) The world would mean (E major [B in the bass]) nothing to me (C diminished chord--the most DISSONANT point) So what good would living do me (a despondent C# minor) God only knows what Id be (with God there is a IV-I cadence like in church music of E major-A major) without you (the sequence surprisingly ends not on a major chord but on F# MINOR)…I believe that theres nothing comparable to it in pop music. Thanks Robert J. Hudson for causing this reflection yesterday, and for Steven Steve Schermerhorn for playing it at our wedding (later teaching me how to play it!).
